Theatre and Drinks

"Theatre & Drinks" (Kazalište i cuga) 🎭 is a theatre group within Queer Sport; it is a collective that attends plays in Zagreb together and goes for drinks afterwards. No prior knowledge of theatre is required—it doesn't matter how much theatre experience you have or how many plays you’ve seen. All LGBTQAI+ individuals are welcome!

Attendance is optional, meaning you can go to every play, just one a year, or join occasionally—whatever suits you best and fits your schedule and budget. It is perfectly fine for our priorities to shift throughout the year.

I choose performances based on intuition and reviews. I try to keep the selection varied—mixing popular titles with more alternative ones, and balancing pure entertainment with works that explore deeper themes. There are queer productions in the mix, too, though that isn't a requirement. I’d love for us to attend ballet and opera performances as well—so everyone can find something they enjoy and we can give a chance to genres we might not otherwise seek out on our own.

Your suggestions are more than welcome! If you spot a show or notice that tickets are going on sale, feel free to let the group know. I can't keep track of absolutely everything, and some things require quick action (like last year with the musical Six, when you guys tipped me off), so we can get organized in time.

What does it look like?
I post details about the play in the group—date, venue, duration, and ticket price. You let me know you’re coming and transfer the money to me, and I buy all the tickets at once (that way, it’s easier for us to sit together and snag better seats while they’re still available). We meet in front of the theater about twenty minutes before the show starts and watch the performance.

Afterwards, if we aren’t too tired, we go for a drink. Anyone who wants to can join; there’s no obligation. If the theater has its own bar, we prefer going there, since the actors often hang out there after the show. We might discuss and dissect the play if we were really into it, but we talk about all sorts of other things, too. It’s not a professional critique session—we just share our impressions.

There’s no pressure to have a profound opinion about the play. It’s perfectly fine to say, "I don’t know, I found it strange," or "I spent half the first act dozing off."

What to wear/bring?
Whatever you feel comfortable in. This is a chance to dress up and finally wear that outfit you have nowhere else to wear, but you can just as easily show up in jeans. There’s no dress code—just be yourself and come relaxed. The only thing that matters is that you’re comfortable sitting for an hour and a half.

Bring a card or some cash for a drink afterwards, if you’re joining in for that part too.

How much does it cost?
You only pay the ticket price; I always post the exact amount in advance for each show. I buy the tickets, and you transfer the money to me via Revolut or KEKS.

If a group discount or promo code is available for a show, we’ll certainly use it. However, that’s often not the case: group discounts usually require a corporate invoice (R1) and a minimum group size, and touring productions generally don't offer them. Regardless, I try to choose showtimes and seats that are reasonably priced.

If you can't make it or are running late
If you’re running late, just let me know and I’ll send the ticket to your WhatsApp so you can enter without waiting. The same applies if something comes up on my end and I can't make it.

If you know in advance that you won't be coming—for any reason (feeling unwell, just not up for it—no need to explain)—just post a message in the group. That way, we won't wait for you outside the theater, and the ticket won't go to waste. You can give it to a friend or offer it to someone else in the group; just let us know who is coming in your place. Our usual practice is to simply give the ticket away in such cases so it doesn't go unused.
