Book Club
Do you love to read? Do you love to debate? Do you love to talk about the books you've just read? If the answer is yes, our Book Club is the right place for you.
How does the Book Club work?
The Book Club meets once a month at Šesnaestica (Ozaljska 16, Zagreb). The exact date of each meeting can vary from month to month, and we always announce it on the Queer Sports Instagram profile along with the title of the current book. You can also follow all the information in the Queer Sports WhatsApp group.
At each meeting, we discuss the book we've been reading over the past month. We share our impressions, discuss the characters, plot, writing style, and themes the book raises. If you disagree with someone's opinion or want to better understand another person's perspective, feel free to ask questions or present your own arguments. Discussions are always open, friendly, and respectful – our goal is to enjoy reading and exchanging different perspectives together.
Meetings usually last between an hour and a half and two hours.
After the discussion ends, we announce the topic for next month. Members then suggest books that fit the assigned theme in the group. Once we've collected three to four suggestions, we vote on the book we'll read over the next month, which we then discuss at the next meeting.
Themes of the Month
To encourage more diverse reading, each book we read belongs to a predetermined monthly theme. This system was introduced for two reasons. The first is to encourage members to explore the widest possible spectrum of literature. The second is to avoid situations where we read very similar books for several months in a row. Often, one book would remind members of another book, then that book would lead to yet another, so it can easily happen that we dedicate many consecutive meetings to very similar titles.
The themes are not limiting and are broad enough that most books can fit into multiple different categories.

• Horror
• War – the plot takes place before, during or after a war
• (Auto)biographies
• Classics – works of classic literature
• Contemporary – books published within the last 10 years
• Historical – the story takes place at least 100 years in the past
• Poetry
• Short story collection
• Comic book
• Non-fiction
• Outside the West – the author or the story must not be connected to Europe or North America
What if I haven't finished the book?
No problem. You can join the discussion even if you haven't finished the book. You're welcome to participate as much as you like and it's no problem if you haven't read the book at all. It happens that sometimes someone gives up on the book during the month but after the discussion they get new motivation and decide to return to it.
Availability of Books
All books we suggest are available at the Zagreb City Libraries. In the rare event that a specific title is not available, the person who suggested it is obligated to offer the other members an alternative way to obtain or access the book.
How much does it cost?
Participation in the Book Club is completely free. The only cost you may incur is a membership fee for the Zagreb City Libraries, which is currently €7 per year.
